The Potter Page We are very fortunate to have a couple of truly notable characters in our ancestry, Jack Meyers Potter and his father Andrew Jackson Potter. While it is easy to take pride in our ancestry, it must be noted that since anyone reading these words had absolutely nothing to do with the notoriety these men achieved, our bragging rights are rather limited. Jack Meyers Potter ( - 1950), generally known as 'Colonel Jack', was a trail boss at the age of 18, served three terms in the New Mexico State Legislature, and wrote several stories about his trail driving experiences that were compiled into books. He was also the subject of a piece of cowboy poetry "Jack Potter's Courtin'" by the noted poet S. Omar Barker. Andrew Jackson Potter (1830 - 1895) was also known as 'The Fighting Parson'. After a young life of hell-raising he found religion at a Methodist revival camp in 1853. He chose a life of evangelism and became one of the best known individuals in Texas in his day. At the age of 51, still in his prime, his biography was written by Harrison A. Graves, another Methodist preacher, and published by Southern Methodist Press in 1881. If nothing else, imagine in those days the degree of renown a man of that age had to have to have his biography published while he was still alive and active.
If you have additional information about either of these men, I would appreciate you sharing it with me. I will gladly give credit where due. Just click here to open an e-mail to me. |
