Andrew Jackson Potter's father, Joshua, served in the army under Andrew Jackson and was impressed enough with him that he named one of his sons after him. In turn, Andrew Jackson Potter served as Chaplain in the 26th Texas Cavalry under Colonel Jack J. Meyers. He named one of his sons Jack Meyers Potter. The 'Colonel' apparently stayed hooked to the name. Later, New Mexico Governor Clyde Tingley made him an honorary colonel which formalized the title.
