Publications Regarding Reverend Andrew Jackson Potter Back to the Potter Page. |
|
BIOGRAPHY
Andrew Jackson Potter, The Fighting Parson of the Texan Frontier This is an incredible treasure of stories about the Reverend Potter. Many of the other publications are exerpts from this book. It is also a soapbox for the author to rant about his own philosophies. When you read it, recognize that it was written by one Methodist minister about another. It can get a little turgid at times. It is long out of print and the few times I have found one for sale via a web search the price was upwards of $1000 for a copy in good condition. However, there is hope on several fronts.
The book is available on CDROM from two different sources in two different flavors. They are: and
CivilWarAncestor.com The Brookhaven Press version is a page by page scan of the original book. You are looking at pictures of the pages. The CivilWarAncestor.com version appears to have been scanned and run through OCR software to create a text version that can be viewed by web browsers. Although a fine version, it contains numerous typographical errors. On the plus side, the Potter book is only one of many books on this CD. If you are interested in other Civil War manuscripts this will give you many. At least for a while there was another web site offering an electronic copy of the book for a mere $15. In reality is was nothing more than the excerpt that CivilWarAncestor.com had posted on their site. It took forever to get the copy and when I found out what it was I called to complain and was promised a refund to my PayPal account. It never came. I notified the folks at CivilWarAncestor.com about the ripoff and they were going to shut it down. Nevertheless, be wary if you see a really good deal out there that is not one of the two above. |

Frontier Times
Several issues of this publication printed excerpts from the biography. One of them used a photo of Andrew Jackson Potter on the cover. It was the same photo that was used for the etching in the fronticepiece of the biography. I made a visit and a couple of calls to the Frontier Times Museum to see if they still had a copy of the photograph. They didn't, but I hope somewhere somebody has a copy of it they are willing to share. When I find my notes I'll post the dates of the issues that included the stories if Rev. Potter. |

Men of Fiber
This is a small booklet profiling several "Men of Fiber", of whom the Rev. Potter is one. Again, when I find the notes I'll list the relevant details. Until then you can probably find it through on of the used boof web search engined like www.adall.com |

Books by Janice Woods Windle
True Women
Ms. Windle writes of her own family's heritage as passed through their women. Reverend Potter makes a couple of cameo appearances but has no real presence or historical signifigance. However, if you are interested in such thing you might enjoy the read anyway.
True Women Cookbook
This cookbook includes a recipe titled "The Reverend Andrew Jackson Potter's Hellfire and Brimstone Chili". There is also a photograph of him that I have seen no where else. My one effort to contact Ms. Windle failed and I have not tried since. If you happen to find her, please ask if she can make a nice high resolution scan of the image and send it to me. Nevertheless, click here for a copy of the recipe (use your 'back' button to return to this page). I made it a couple of times to rave reviews. Give it a try yourself.
